The community of Kearny Mesa, about 4,000 acres, is a major industrial and commercial employment area occupying a central location in the City of San Diego. Kearny Mesa is classified in the General Plan as a "Regional Employment Center" with a diverse mix of business and public uses including small locally based startup businesses to large established national companies. The area produces a range of products and services from heavy manufacturing to high tech military products, from call centers and medical offices to telecommunications systems development. In recent years more retail uses have located in Kearny Mesa that attract consumers from all over San Diego County.
The Kearny Mesa area has exceptional highway access, being bounded or bisected by four major highways, I-805, SR-163, I-15 and SR-52. The western area of Kearny Mesa is mostly smaller multi-tenant business parks, business support and consumer retail uses including many automobile dealerships. The eastern area is primarily industrial and offices uses, including larger business parks, single user industrial complexes and single and multi-tenant office space. Residential areas are located in four subcommunities: Stonecrest, a newer master planned residental area in the southeast corner, Royal Highlands, a smaller community that was separated from east Claremont when I-805 was constructed on the western perimeter, Kearny Lodge in the north central area and Spectrum, a master planned multi-use redevelopment area at the original General Dynamics Astronautics site now called Spectrum.
